Other Native & Exotic Animals at WRR
Here at Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
(WRR) the focus of our care extends to both native and non-native
(exotic) species of animals. We take in no fewer than 6,000
to 7,000 animals each year and fortunately most of these are
native species who can be treated, rehabilitated, and set
free. Though these animals have suffered from illnesses, injuries,
or the loss their parents, it was necessary for them to remain
in captivity for only a brief period before they could resume
their lives in their world.
For those animals who have been victimized
by the so-called "pet" trade, life is not so simple,
nor is it so optimistic. For the iguana, sugar glider, parrot,
boa constrictor, and others, the future holds no promise of
being lived naturally in the wild.
Because of the greed and selfish desires of
human beings, the non-native wildlife who are victims of the
"pet" trade will never again know the joys of life
in a free and natural setting. We do our best here at WRR
to give them spacious living areas outside, but this does
not come close to their life in lush, green jungles or the
wide open spaces that nature has provided for them.
Wildlife is just that…wild.
They have not been domesticated, nor should they be. Please
do not contribute to the cruel horrors of the wild and exotic
"pet" trade. Do not purchase these animals
— tens of hundreds of thousands of them are killed every
year when they are cruelly captured and transported from their
native lands and countless others are bred in this country
in equally cruel conditions. If you want to have the companionship
of a non-human animal, there are literally millions of dogs
and cats in shelters and municipal animal control facilities
who will be killed if they do not find a loving, caring home.
Think of these domesticated animals when you are considering
sharing your life with someone. They need you, and unlike
wildlife, they want to be in your company.
