Executive Director

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) in Kendalia, TX, seeks an experienced senior administrator for this 33-year-old organization. Located on 200 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country west of Austin and San Antonio, WRR provides wildlife rehabilitation, sanctuary for wild and farmed animals, education, and advocacy through a staff of 22, volunteers, and a major internship/apprentice program. In conjunction with the Founder/CEO, the ED provides leadership in continuing and building upon WRR's record of accomplishment.

Job Description

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and creativity in overseeing the daily and long-term operations of WRR. In addition to the specific tasks enumerated below, the ED must maintain a big picture view of organizational operations and of the priorities for use of his/her time in their support and facilitation. He/she is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and excellence of all WRR programs and operational practices and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer to monitor relevant performance measures. Skill and experience in all aspects of fundraising as well as personnel, facility, and budget management are mandatory. Experience in environmental or animal protection organizations is desirable. Specific tasks include the following:

 

Financial Management

•  

Prepare and oversee budget

•  

Control expenditures, monitor cash flow, income, and expenses

•  

Ensure timely and accurate financial reports

•  

Participate as needed in fund development (e.g., special events, endowment campaign) and work with the CEO and Development Director to ensure effectiveness and productivity of all fund development activities

 

Personnel Management

•  

Supervise and manage assigned staff, and discipline when necessary

•  

Schedule/lead in-house education seminars and retreats

•  

Maintain and motivate a productive work force and positive work environment and work to establish competitive and fair remuneration and benefit levels

•  

Ensure an adequate work force in numbers, skills, and appropriate job types

 

Marketing & Public Relations (includes e-newsletter, online store)

•  

Publish e-newsletter

•  

Develop, manage, and expand online store, conduct product research, and ensure that sales items are in line with WRR product selection philosophy

•  

Make public speaking appearances

•  

Assist with media relations

•  

Help to compose and execute annual marketing/PR

 

Policies & Procedures

•  

Anticipate the need for, develop, enforce, and revise as needed appropriate policies and procedures

 

Property Management

•  

Develop comprehensive construction plans and supervise execution

•  

Track, schedule, and follow up on maintenance and repair issues

•  

Perform weekly inspection of facilities, grounds, and equipment to be sure all are clean and maintained, and sufficient to their assigned purposes

 

Program Management

•  

Supervise managers of Education, Volunteers, Animal Care, Maintenance, and Development, along with the Veterinarian and Hotline staff, to ensure full and effective compliance with job descriptions

 

Other

•  

Act as primary point of contact with the Board and provide all needed support and information for discharge of their responsibilities

•  

Continually monitor and update website; keep IT functioning and relatively up-to-date, arrange maintenance and repair when necessary

•  

Perform strategic planning, including development of annual plan

Start Date & Compensation

This position begins mid-summer 2010. The salary for this position is $45,000–$60,000 per year, DOE.

Animal Caretaker Apprentice

Established in 1977, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) receives up to 7,000 wild animals per year for rehabilitation and release as well as providing permanent sanctuary for over 600 resident non-releasable indigenous wildlife, exotic wildlife (large mammals, primates, reptiles, and birds), and farm animals. WRR is located on 187 acres in beautiful Texas Hill Country, near Austin and San Antonio.

WRR is looking for those qualified candidates who have chosen a career path in animal care. Applications are now being accepted for the position of Animal Caretaker Apprentice. This opportunity is appropriate for individuals who have the potential to become entry-level caregivers but lack substantial experience in working with animals.

This position involves substantial animal husbandry responsibilities, limited basic medical work, administrative duties (record-keeping and telephone work), and fieldwork involving rescues, releases, and transportation of animals. Day-to-day responsibilities include feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring behavior, and enrichment activities. Apprentice Caretakers are here to learn the daily care basics as well as our philosophy of wildlife rehabilitation. Apprentice Caretakers assist our Senior Caretakers in all aspects of daily care, cleaning, and feeding. This position involves substantial physical labor (must be able to lift 50 pounds) in all types of outdoor conditions. Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are required. A good driving record and ability to drive manual transmission vehicles are also necessary.

Desired candidates are mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding workload, and long hours, and to work independently or as a team. Applicants should posses a strong personal work ethic and a high level of integrity. Successful completion of a 6-month internship at WRR or comparable one-year experience is required. A minimum one-year commitment to this position is expected.

Compensation

A $500 per month stipend plus housing is provided. Limited openings available.

Hotline Rescue Specialist Apprentice

Established in 1977, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation receives approximately 6,000 wild animals per year for rehabilitation and release as well as providing permanent sanctuary for 600+ resident, non-releasable indigenous wildlife, nonindigenous wildlife (large mammals, primates, reptiles and birds), and farmed animals. Wildlife Rescue is located on 187 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, approximately 1 hour from Austin and San Antonio.

The Hotline Rescue Specialist Apprentice is responsible for the Wildlife Hotline's incoming and outgoing calls. The majority of the calls concern orphaned and injured wildlife as well as general public inquiries about wildlife concerns, and this position counsels the public on how to humanely deal with human-wildlife encounters. The Apprentice is also responsible for coordinating WRR volunteers for services such as animal rescues and transport of animals to Wildlife Rescue for care.

The successful candidate is a mature individual with a professional and pleasant phone demeanor. He/she must have the ability to handle a faced-paced and challenging workload and often emotionally charged situations with callers regarding animals in trouble, excellent written and verbal skills, and the ability to deal with a variety of people and personalities. Knowledge of native Texas wildlife is essential. Applicants should posses a strong personal work ethic and a high level of integrity. Depending on the need and the season, some animal caretaking work may be involved including feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring behavior, administering basic medical care and enrichment activities. A minimum one-year commitment to this position is expected.
