Veterinary Technician Internship

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) in Kendalia TX is accepting applications for Veterinary Technician Internships. One position is available July 2009 through July 2010. The second is available February 2010 through February 2011.

Established in 1977, WRR receives approximately 5,000 wild animals every year for rehabilitation and release as well as providing permanent sanctuary for 600 resident non-releasable indigenous wildlife, exotic wildlife (large mammals, primates, reptiles, and birds), and farm animals. WRR n is located on 187 acres in beautiful Texas Hill Country near Austin and San Antonio.

The Veterinary Technician Intern supports the veterinarian in a variety of ways. Interns learn basic medical and diagnostic skills, how to examine animals, and how to administer medication. They assist with surgeries and medical procedures, provide basic husbandry care for a diverse range of animal species, rescue and transport animals, and perform administrative duties. This is an excellent opportunity to learn hands-on about captive, free-ranging, and urban wildlife with an emphasis on humane ethics and solutions.

Veterinary Technician internships require a 1-year commitment. This position requires physical labor (must be able to lift 50 pounds) and the ability to work in all types of outdoor conditions and to handle a demanding workload and long hours. Applicants should have a Bachelor's Degree in an animal-related field and currently attend or plan to attend veterinary or vet tech school. Candidates will possess a strong personal work ethic, a high level of personal integrity, be self-motivated, and be able to work as member of a team as well independently. Organizational skills and ability to efficiently multi-task are a must. Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are required. A good driving record and ability to drive manual transmission vehicles are also necessary. Personal ethics that are in line with WRR philosophies, including vegetarian lifestyle, are a plus.

Wildlife Rescue provides housing and a $100 per month meal stipend.
