WRR Helps Dozens of Dogs Rescued in Northeast
San Antonio
Kendalia, TX – Wednesday, March 21,
2007 – Dozens of dogs who had been rescued off the streets
and housed and fed at a dilapidated property in Northeast
San Antonio are a step closer to finding permanent loving
homes.
The city's Animal Care Services had been poised
to seize the animals — a likely death sentence —
before Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation was called about
the situation. The caller had been unable to find any other
organization to help and had finally called us in desperation.
Within days, WRR staff negotiated a "stay
of execution" with ACS, organized a coalition of volunteers
willing to work together to rescue the animals, made an agreement
with the property owner to remove the dogs, and toured three
television crews over the grounds.
Volunteers
on the scene found about 22 mid-sized adult dogs living on
the Stahl Road property along with at least three litters
of puppies. The elderly woman who had rescued the animals
off the streets had been feeding the animals for at least
four years at the house, but conditions are far from adequate.
However, despite the unsanitary and dangerous situation, rescuers
were impressed by the apparent health and gentle disposition
of the animals.
The Bulverde Animal Shelter has offered to
house many of the dogs at their shelter, while Wildlife Rescue
& Rehabilitation works to bring in veterinarians to treat
the animals.
The group will spay and neuter all the animals,
treat them for any residual health problems, and ultimately
make them presentable for adoption by loving area families.
A behavioral expert is being sought to help determine which
dogs may not be adoptable.
Other groups that have expressed a willingness
to volunteer for the animals are Almost Home, Hill Country
Animal League, and Animal House.
Already, calls from concerned San Antonio
residents are pouring in. But volunteers are desperately needed
to make this rescue a success. For information about volunteering
or adoptions, please call WRR at (830) 336-2725 or (830) 336-2725.

About Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR)
was founded in 1977 in San Antonio by Lynn Cuny. Our mission
is to provide rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned,
injured, and displaced wildlife, and provide sanctuary with
dignity for non-releasable and non-native wild animals who
have been the victims of the exotic pet trade, rescued from
roadside zoos, or used in research. Today WRR volunteers and
staff annually receive 5,000–6,000 animals at our 187-acre
sanctuary outside Kendalia, Texas. Over 600 wild and farmed
animals make their permanent home at WRR.
