Animal Planet's My New Wild Life

Life at Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) in Kendalia, Texas, is the subject of Animal Planet's 13-episode series, My New Wild Life, which will air on weekdays at 2:00 p.m. CT (3:00 p.m. ET/PT) starting on June 30, 2008. This series takes a close look at wildlife, their too-often debilitating encounters with humans, and the compassionate people who nurse them back to health.

WRR rescues, rehabilitates, and releases orphaned, injured, and displaced wild animals and provides sanctuary with dignity for non-releasable and non-native wildlife. The Texas Hill Country facility consists of a rehabilitation clinic and nursery, a 200-acre sanctuary grounds with the staff, interns, and volunteers to provide round-the-clock care for the thousands of domesticated and wild animals needing help.

New interns Kirsten and Jordan experienced the joys and sorrows of caring for wild and domesticated animals at the WRR sanctuary. During their eight-week tenure, they learned to feed orphaned infant mammals, care for primates in sanctuary, and tend to the farmed animals in the Do No Harm Farm. The new interns learned firsthand what it truly takes to be an animal caretaker.

WRR's animal care and administrative staff were thoroughly involved during the eight weeks the production crew was on site filming. Great time and resources were invested in making sure that Animal Planet would get the footage they needed to make an exciting and popular series that represented WRR and all that we do for the animals. WRR provided on-site housing for the interns as well as in-depth on-the-job training.

The administration, staff, and interns at WRR thoroughly enjoyed their experience working on My New Wild Life. It helped us to look at our life's work through fresh eyes and truly appreciate what this organization is able to do for thousands of animals each year. The production crew from Painless Productions was talented, professional, and fun to be around, and we were honored to have a part in Animal Planet's programming.

If you have always wondered what it would be like to spend your days and nights caring for animals in need, tune in to My New Wild Life — a behind-the-scenes look at a true wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation facility.

Reality Check

Hoping their dreams of working with animals will be fulfilled, Texas interns Jordan and Kirsten learn the strict rules of the sanctuary. In California interns Robert, Amaia, and Claire become tired with the tedious chores involved in caring for elephants.

Creatures Big and Small

Tragedy strikes in Texas when a baby bird dies while Kirsten is feeding him. In California, Robert, Amaia and Claire feed animals on a much larger scale.

Upset Marmoset

Jordan develops a special bond with a marmoset who has been confiscated from a pet store by law enforcement officials and brought to the Texas sanctuary. In California, Robert, Amaia, and Claire must gain the endorsement of one dominate African elephant.

Hope for Javelina

In California, the oldest tiger, Miss Kitty, suffers from mysterious seizures and suddenly stops eating. In Texas, an orphaned javelina arrives at the sanctuary.

Feline Fix

In California, some of the male tigers are becoming territorial and begin to fight eachother. To calm them down, the interns assist the medical staff with neutering seven tigers. In Texas, a woman drops off a calf that she has rescued and raised as a pet.

Cat Tales

In California, there is trouble with the largest tiger at the sanctuary. Intern Claire is chosen to accompany the tiger to the hospital for its surgery. Three orphaned bobcat cubs arrive in Texas and the interns turn all of their attention to save them.

Bear Necessities

In Texas, Jordan assists the staff when they try to tranquilize an elderly wolf in order to shave her matted fur and treat her irritated skin. California intern Robert is put in charge of outfitting a new enclosure at the sanctuary for an abandoned bear.

Below the Gate

In Texas, interns Kirsten and Jordan are finally allowed to work "Below the Gate," where the most dangerous animals of the sanctuary dwell. In California Robert, Amaia, and Claire work to enrich the tiger habitat to keep the big cats active and healthy.

Curiosity Bites

In Texas, Jordan and Kirsten are finally ready to work without direct supervision at the sanctuary. Kirsten's first day alone turns to chaos. California intern Claire is assigned to learn the do's and don'ts when working with the magnificent tigers.

Possum PR

In California, Amaia has been given the task of supervising the building of a new enclosure and moving Sosha, the mountain lion, into it. In Texas, a San Antonio newspaper article about possums unduly alarms everyone about the animals.

Elephant Curfew

The temperature is dropping in California at night and one elephant, is not returning to the barn in the evening, as she should. Amaia takes it upon herself to teach her. In Texas, an injured racoon and an elderly lion fight to survive.

Pachyderm Pedicure

Texas interns Jordan and Kirsten meet the macaque monkeys that were rescued from a lab where various tests were preformed on them. In California, the interns participate in a pachyderm pedicure where they clean the feet of the elephants at the sanctuary.

Yesterday and Tomorrow

The journey has come to an end for the interns in both California and Texas. After each intern is given a final evaluation, they say goodbye to their favorite animals and reflect on the experiences they have had at the sanctuaries.
