lioness
WRR said goodbye this month to one of the Asian Lions. She died peacefully of old age in her enclosure and in the company of her long-time companion, another Asian Lioness. The two came to WRR in March 2004 along with a pair of African Lions from the Detroit/Belle-Isle Zoo. She was 25 years old, a very long life for her kind. For the past 2 1/2 years, she enjoyed hiding in the grasses and peeking out with her soulful eyes at any passers-by: the vultures, sheep and donkeys and the caretakers. She was often seen napping side-by-side with her lioness friend. She led a quiet and contented life.

It is always difficult to lose one of our permanent residents, but we can take solace in the fact that the last years of her life were spent with dignity in her nature-filled enclosure and in the company of a loved one.

violet
Violet, a pink pig, came to live at Wildlife Rescue this fall. She came to us from a family who could no longer care for her. Violet has a neurological disorder that affects her back legs. When she first arrived, she was only able to drag herself around the yard and only for a few feet at a time before needing to pause and rest. But after a few weeks of fresh air and exercise, she is walking and even running at times. Violet told us she did not need her hydrotherapy by running away so quickly, the caretakers couldn't catch her!

Shorly after Violet arrived, we also accepted a black pot-belly male pig, cast off by his family. He was placed in the same area as Violet, and the two immediately became friends. The male was named Augustus (Violet and Augustus were two characters from Willy Wonka.) They live together as a pair in the yard of the Administration Building and spend their days eating, wallowing in the mud, and sleeping under a bush together.

Lynn and the WRR staff would like to invite you to a members-only holiday party at the Kendalia sanctuary on Saturday, December 2 from 11am-1pm. Join us to share some holiday cheer. Lynn will be on hand to sign copies of her book, and this will be a great opportunity to finish your holiday shopping at the WRR Gift Shop. Many WRR members have the opportunity to support the work of Wildlife Rescue through payroll contributions at work. WRR is represented by Earth Share of Texas, an umbrella group for Texas' leading environmental and conservation groups. Most workplace giving campaigns are conducted from September through early November, so now is the time to look for pledge cards in your workplace. Look for Earth Share of Texas and Wildlife Rescue in campaign literature and on pledge cards at all state agencies; all state colleges and universities; federal agencies in most parts of Texas; Houston and Austin school districts; Austin, Dallas, El Paso and Houston municipal offices; and many private employers including American Airlines, Campaq Computer Corporation, Dell Computer Corporation, Green Mountain Energy and Vignette.

If your employer doesn't offer the chance to support Wildlife Rescue and the other Earth Share of Texas environmental groups, visit Earth Share of Texas on the web at www.earthshare-texas.org, call 800- GREENTX or email estx@earthshare-texas.org. You may also contact WRR's Earth Share of Texas representative, Angela Grimes at 830-336-2725.
