Ramping Up for Baby Season
Ramping
Up for Baby Season
by Angela Grimes, Director of Operations
March is just around the corner, and that
month means the official start of Baby Season. We spend the
relatively quiet winter months preparing our clinic and nursery
for the six months of constant influx of baby Opossums, Squirrels,
Raccoons, Bobcats, Sparrows, Doves, Pigeons, and countless
others. The clinic intake room will soon be bulging at the
seams with up to 50–60 new arrivals each night. It is
our responsibility to be fully prepared to do what is necessary
to save each life. There are several items still on our wish
list. They range from your old sheets, t-shirts and blankets
to be used for Animal bedding to incubators, net cages, and
food preparation equipment. Please see our wish
list for items that will make the Animals more comfortable
while they are in our care.
We
are filling our coffers with baby formula, bedding, and medical
supplies, but we are also filling our intern housing. In anticipation
of 24-hour work days and hungry mouths needing to be fed as
often as every 20 minutes, we are welcoming new interns
who will assist our staff in caring for the Animals. Kylie
Hudson from Pennsylvania, Justine Rose from New York, Beckie
Juarez from California, and Yuki Nakayama from California
(pictured left to right) have all recently joined our hardworking
team. We are also calling on our volunteers
to help in the clinic and nursery. This is the time of year
when we need you most. Every hand that helps means that the
babies are well-fed, clean, and on their way to release.
If you would like to volunteer your sewing
skills, we are seeking a few people who would like to make
some very simple Squirrel and Opossum nesting pouches. These
pouches keep tiny baby bodies warm and feeling secure. Similar
to a small pillow case, they are made of fleece, about 9"
long by 6" wide with the opening on a 6" side and
two grommets at the top for hanging. Please call Angela at
(830) 336-2725 if you want to be instrumental in helping the
little ones who are in our nursery.
Please help Wildlife Rescue prepare for baby
season. There are a number of ways that you can be involved.

Volunteer Coordinator, at (830) 336-2725 or (830) 336-2725.
