WRR Sanctuary News

September/October 2007

Baby season is winding down, and WRR is now preparing for fall and winter. With summer temperatures still in full force, it doesn't seem possible that a cold front could blow through in only a few weeks.

Fall brings our attention to the outdoors, to the facilities that house the 600 sanctuary residents to be sure that we are ready for the colder temperatures, and to the sheep who need their fall shearing. It is the time of year when we check all of primates' heated houses to be sure they have a warm place to spend cold winter nights. We will begin to stock up on hay for the farmed animals to eat when the green grasses turn to brown. Hay is also an essential bedding material for nearly every animal who lives in the sanctuary.

Numbers of babies in the rehabilitation clinic are dwindling. There are still many that need our care, but not the hundreds that graced our doors every week for the past six months. The most happy of fall moments are the releases — five orphaned baby bobcats, more than 70 fawns, and the squirrels, opossums, birds, and others who arrived late in the summer will soon be set free in their natural habitat.

We could not do this critical work without the ongoing support of our generous members. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you at our 30th Anniversary Open House on October 13!

Warmest regards,

Angela
