WRR
Makes Advancements in Shorebird Rehabilitation
by Angela Grimes, Director of Operations
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR)
has rescued a record number of shore and wading birds this
past spring and summer. From Cattle and Snowy Egrets to Green-backed,
Crested Night, and Great Blue Herons, all are exceedingly
fragile and highly sensitive species. These striking birds
are endowed with highly evolved hunting skills and are extremely
reclusive. Both of these traits make successful care and rehabilitation
a day-to-day challenge.
The WRR veterinary staff has gone the extra
mile to learn surgery and husbandry techniques that have resulted
in record high survival and release rates for these vulnerable
birds.
There is nothing more rewarding than watching
the release of an animal who may not have survived without
our care. Seeing a beautiful egret or heron wade confidently
into the water or take flight from our rehabilitation pond
is an amazing sight.
