Sanctuary News
August 2008
In this edition of WRR Sanctuary News,
I ask that you not only sit back and enjoy the stories of
the animals, but that you take action on behalf of them and
their brethren in need. Animals need the help of thousands
across the country and two important items are on the agenda:
| 1) |
California's ballot initiative Prop
2 will ban battery cages for egg-laying hens, gestation
crates for pigs, and veal crates for calves. To our
California members, please vote YES on Prop 2 and help
end the suffering of millions of animals in California.
If you don't live in California, but know people who
do, forward this e-newsletter to them and urge them
to vote YES. The "California's
Proposition 2 to End Farmed Animal Suffering"
article in this edition of WRR Sanctuary News
contains more information and talking points. |
| 2) |
All WRR members can help pass a bill
recently introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives
that will prevent the cruel and inhumane transport of
horses across our borders to Canada and Mexico. The
United States no longer allows horse slaughter, but
a loophole in this law allows our horses to be taken
across the border to be killed for human consumption.
The transport is a horribly grueling trip with a fatal
conclusion, and we must close this loophole.
I ask you to take a moment to write or call your Representative
and ask him or her to support of the Conyers-Burton
Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 (H.R. 6598).

Summer is here and with it comes high energy
bills, among the many other things that now cost so much more
than they used to. We know these economic times are hard.
We are all paying more for our groceries and the cost of gas
is climbing to unbearable highs. You and I are both feeling
this economic pinch, but when you make charitable giving choices,
please remember that WRR too is paying more for food, gas,
and other supplies. You will read below about a young
Blackbuck who lives here at the WRR sanctuary and Little
Blue Heron chicks who were saved through the help of our
hotline and
caring staff. They know nothing of the economy and their needs
do not change to reflect the times. The blackbuck and the
herons are here today because of the people who support WRR.
We thank you for your continued
help and generosity in these tough times so that we may
continue our life-saving work.
Best wishes,

Angela Grimes, Associate Executive Director
